Dr. Helm’s Top Tips for Eye Health

From Issue #3

  1. Eat a Proper Diet: Most people could eat more leafy green vegetables. Cold water fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids are vital. Beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin are among the very important nutrients we get from leafy greens or eggs. Foods high in vitamins A, C, E and zinc benefit eye health. Low-sugar foods can also help in staving off macular degeneration.
  2. Get screened: Anyone 40 or older should be screened regularly for glaucoma, which presents no noticeable symptoms, especially if there is a family history. Glaucoma can silently and painlessly sneak up on you and steal your eyesight when it could have been prevented.
  3. Don’t smoke: Studies show smoking increases risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome. If you smoke, quitting can reduce risk.
  4. Wear Sunglasses: Using sunglasses is the biggest controllable factor for reducing cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye problems. You can also have clear lenses that are 100 percent UV-protected.
  5. Wear Protective Goggles: A smart idea when doing anything using power tools, and great idea for athletes, especially weekend warriors who tend to get hurt more often.
