Health Coach Brings Hipness to His Healing Practice

From Issue #3

Hippocratic quotes inspire mission to extend healthspan

Hippocrates is considered by many to be the father of modern medicine, to whom we attribute a number of quotes relevant to medicine, most famous of which is: “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”

LaRue Palmer is a career chef turned integrative nutrition health coach, turned diabetes educator, with a mission to teach people to do just that, let food be their medicine and, therefore, their medicine be their food.

Palmer will launch his newly created Dietbetic Healing program early this year as part of Chiro-Integrative Health Center’s restructured chiropractic and wellness practice run by partner Tyra Beavers, DC, in Beverly Hills.

In his role as the program coordinator, Palmer will teach clients how to lose weight (especially persons with diabetes) and how to heal their bodies and minds through whole food nutrition and meaningful lifestyle modification.

A play on words, Dietbetic Healing hints at diabetes, a largely preventable dietary disease where nutrition and lifestyle play a major role in prevention. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the fifth leading cause of death in the U.S., is largely preventable, and in many cases even reversible.

Obviously no stranger to food, Palmer was fortunate enough to begin his career as a personal chef to clients that had dietary restrictions due to various health conditions.

As his career took off he never lost that personal touch, even doing a stint as chef for Sunrise Senior Assisted Living in Beverly Hills, one of the top five largest assisted living service providers in the country.

The Dietbetic Healing program incorporates a sensible, nutritionally sound weight loss program managed by OPTAVIATM, along with an evidence-based diabetes self-management education and support program (DSMES) for those at risk for type 2 diabetes. The DSMES is sanctioned by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), of which Palmer is an active member.

Food as medicine is a strange notion to some, but the problem is that much of the food we consume today doesn’t actually qualify as real food, but processed food-like substances often referred to as “Frankenfood.”

Dietbetic Healing is based on the health benefits gained from a predominantly plant-based, macronutrient diet, while incorporating clinically proven methods that result in improved health outcomes for its participants.

“America’s appetite for fast foods and processed foods with too many carbs and added sugar is literally making us sick,” Palmer said.

“We are headed for a collision course with soaring costs and rise in diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and stroke to name a few, and most of it is due to the poor food and lifestyle choices we make,” he said.

“In addition, because of so many additives in our food and genetic modifications, people are looking for information they can trust that will keep them out of the healthcare system and off prescription drugs for as long as possible,” Palmer said. “Dietbetic Healing is one way you can get a new lease on life by looking at health and wellness in a whole new light.”

A lesser known quote by Hippocrates is noteworthy: “Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.”
